The TreeHouse at Liberty Hospital

Eating on deck - To celebrate National Hospitality House Week, the volunteers had a pot luck luncheon and enjoyed it on the back deck.

Education Dept - The Hospital Education Department made a surprise visit to the TreeHouse with a Christmas gift. The department collected items for the house and funds to buy a much needed cart!

Charlie and Loretta Hughes - You can name a day in honor or in memory of a special person. Loretta Hughes named the first day of operation of the TreeHouse in honor of her husband, Charlie Hughes. Charlie surprised Loretta by also naming their anniversary. You can name a day at the TreeHouse for a gift of $500.

TREEHOUSE OPENS:

The TreeHouse officially opened on January 10, 2005. The first few weeks of operation during Kansas City 's unpredictable winter weather allowed TreeHouse to welcome guests in out of the snow and ice. Even though winter caused an exciting opening, TreeHouse finds itself full with families needing a place to stay while a loved one is in the hospital during warm and seasonable weather as well. TREEHOUSE ACCOMODATIONS:

TreeHouse is built on the knoll overlooking the Hospital Walking Trail, with a lower story walkout basement. It has 10 sleeping rooms with attached private bathrooms, laundry facilities, a quiet room, and a kitchen/hearth room that functions as the heart of the house, all with the feel of a home-away-from-home. A manager, lives on-site, and is on duty at night. Volunteer s staff the house during the day.

STAYING AT TREEHOUSE:

Rooms at TreeHouse are available on a first-come-first-served basis for family members of patients and patients awaiting treatment. There is a suggested donation per night per room but no family will be denied access because of inability to pay. Two days before a hospital stay, family members are asked to call the house at 816-883-2088 if they wish to be put on a guest waiting list. Or families have the option of going directly to TreeHouse the day they wish to stay and may check in based on availability.

INSPIRATION TO BUILD TREEHOUSE:

The TreeHouse was the brainstorm of the Liberty Hospital Foundation and Hospital Employees who were looking for a way to help fulfill the Foundation’s mission.

"The TreeHouse will fulfill the Liberty Hospital Foundation's mission to have a positive impact on patients and employees of Liberty Hospital by funding a home away from home for patients' families," explains Ron Mullennix, Project TreeHouse co-chair. "This is another way to enhance patient care at Liberty Hospital , reinforcing the hospital's commitment to care for each patient's body, mind and spirit."

Staff saw family members needing a place to stay while a loved one was hospitalized.  TreeHouse was built to provide care and comfort to patients and their families.
